Historical significance

The New Bern was founded in the year 1710. Earlier, German adventurers settled here. It was also one of the major ports here. The Union Army captured the town in 1862.

There is a legend about a flaming ship in the New Bern. It is said that on dark summer nights a huge ship consumed by flames can be seen here. Though it blazes wildly, it is not destroyed.

German Protestants known as the Palatines started to New Bern in 1710. Their plan was to settle there. In order to protect their treasure they pretended to be poor. They hid their treasure from the crew of the ship. When they came near to their new home they felt so thrilled and brought all their treasure from the hiding places and got ready to land there. Seeing this precious treasure the cunning captain announced that they could not land on that day. The innocent Palatines didn't recognize the cruelty in his mind. They hid their treasure and went to bed.

At midnight the captain discussed his plan with the crew of the ship and they decided to kill all the Palatines.

As per plan they killed them and took their treasure. Finally the ship was set afire and they escaped in rowboats. After some time they glanced back. That scene shocked them. The ship didn't sink and it started moving. The murderers became panicky. They abandoned their boats and treasure and hid themselves in the woods.

It is said that each year the flaming ship will appear at New Bern.
