Historical significance

Even before the Pilgrims settled in the Plymouth Colony area, Europeans explored the American shores, and settlements were believed to have been established in the neighboring areas. The European fishermen in the 16th and the 17th centuries explored the New England coastline. Samuel de Champlain, a Frenchman in the year 1605, explored these parts thoroughly with a preferred search over the Plymouth Harbor and concluded by initiating a map of the area and its neighborhood. Champlain in his map mentioned the native village of Patuxet on which the Plymouth town would stand later as a flourishing settlement. Before the arrival of Mayflower, several diseases carried by the English fishermen had wiped out entire local populations. The explorations of the Pilgrims in the Cape Cod area had led to the discovery of a grave with the remains of Europeans and they came across the remnants of a European fort.
