Location

The South Beach is along the northeastern coast of Fishers Island. The beautiful Fishers Island comes under the jurisdiction of Suffolk County in New York, US.

Historical significance

The island was first sighted in 1614 by Captain Adrian Block while he was voyaging on his yacht called Restless. A Dutch geographer called Delait was the earliest person to map Fishers Island. Even after Block's discovery of the island, for nearly 25 years nobody treaded upon it except the Dutch traders. Even they went there to buy sundry items from the Native Americans living there. The island started its contemporary journey only after 1640 when John Winthrop obtained rights to begin various infrastructures on the island.

Tourist attractions

This beach is a lovely beach where the waters crash upon the brown-pebbled shore with great force every few minutes. There are no facilities at this beach. The lack of facilities is compensated by the wild beauty of the beach. The beach waters stretch for many nautical miles and merge with the North Atlantic Ocean.

Strolling upon the pebbled beach will be a different experience from walking upon soft white sands. The beach offers many beautiful views of neighboring lands on its right and left. One can collect many beautiful shells and pebbles at this beach.

The Walton Ferguson House, Red Barn Gallery, Pandion Gallery, Fishers Island Yacht Club, Henry L. Ferguson Museum and the Village Market are nice and interesting places that can be visited while coming to this island. Our Lady of Grace and St. John's Church are places of worship.

The Race Rock Light is located a few nautical miles off the western coast of Fishers Island. Some people say it is haunted. Though it is not open to public, people sail towards it as close as they can. People coming here try to cover the entire island in one weekend. And, they more or less accomplish their task. But it will take at least one full week to savor the island completely.

Best period to visit

The summer months between April and October are the best months to visit the beach.
